What to expect during your Anne Frank Tour in Amsterdam

On this 2-hour walking tour through the former Jewish Quarter, you will learn more about the courageous girl Anne Frank and the Jewish history of Amsterdam.

“(…) I also think that later on, neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl.” – With these words, Anne Frank began her diary.

As you know, she could not have been more mistaken. Just one year after her death, in 1946, a journalist wrote in an Amsterdam daily newspaper: “This seemingly insignificant diary of a child reveals the full horror of fascism more clearly than all the evidence presented at the Nuremberg Trials combined.”

Anne Frank’s diary forms the thread that will guide you through the Jewish history of Amsterdam before, during and after the Second World War. At many stops along the way, your guide will let Anne speak through her own words and place her experiences within the broader context of the city’s Jewish history.

Travel into Amsterdam’s Jewish past

Your tour begins at the Anne Frank Monument, just around the corner from the famous Anne Frank House by the Westerkerk – a church to which Anne felt a special connection.

As you walk through Amsterdam’s historic centre, you will pass several of the city’s most important landmarks that are closely linked to its Jewish history. Your guide will explain how greatly the Jewish community contributed to shaping the Amsterdam we see today.

You will explore the Jewish Quarter, where most of Amsterdam’s Jewish population once settled, and hear fascinating stories about why the community chose to live in this particular area. Jews were not the only residents here, however – the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn also lived in the heart of the neighbourhood.

During the tour you will see the Portuguese Synagogue, Amsterdam’s Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) and memorials commemorating the horrors of the Second World War. You will hear moving stories about the events that took place in Amsterdam and the Netherlands during this time, and learn how both Jews and non-Jews risked their own lives to save others. You will also discover how the Jewish community lives in multicultural Amsterdam today.

Important information regarding your Anne Frank Tour

Please note that this tour does not include entry to the Anne Frank House. Today it is extremely difficult to obtain tickets, as the building is simply too small for the large number of visitors from around the world.

However, our tour is ideal for those who were unable to get tickets, as well as for visitors who have already been to the Anne Frank House and would like to explore the wider context of Jewish life in Amsterdam.

Our tour focuses not only on Anne Frank’s life, but also on Jewish life before and after the Holocaust, making it particularly suitable for school groups. You do not need to have read Anne Frank’s diary in order to follow the tour.

Anne Frank Guided Walks tour; (Not Inc Anne Frank House). Booked this tour in addition to visiting the Frank house (which these guys helped us get tix for - very grateful), had Emilia as our guide, she was outstanding. Very insightful, very historically knowledgeable and also could read the room and knew when to give us a moment to absorb the horrorible things we were learning and deal with it in our own time & way. I really enjoyed getting the grounding of this tour before visiting the Frank House, and recommend it highly to anyone pondering these decisions. Coming from Australia, I wasn’t sure of which way to do it, or to do both etc, this way turned out perfect. Walks tour - Then the House.

Great support and planning We stayed as a practice team (13 people ) 3 nights in Amsterdam. We were actively and professionally looked after by the team of "Amsterdamliebe". The previous email contact was always fast and friendly. In Amsterdam we had direct contact via WhatsApp 🙂 In the suburb we had done a private canal tour (with Josch) as well as an Anne Frank tour (with Nina) and a bike tour in the north of Amsterdam (with Leonie). All three were young and had carried out their tours with love. Also the food was booked for us by Amsterdamliebe, everything was excellent ! We had a tight program 🙂 but everything went like clockwork. Amsterdamlove was always at our side with advice and deed ! Thank you very much for this dear team from Amsterdamliebe......you can see how the young team loves their city 😉 There should be something like this in every big city!
